A NOTE FROM STACY

Greetings and welcome to Atomic Research!

This company is both my brainchild and my lovechild as well as the product of a pretty amazing albeit atypical and self-paved path through the fun and fascinating world of market research. My love for this work was sealed the first time I got to conduct "real" research as an undergraduate research assistant. I moved on to graduate school to study Industrial Organizational Psychology with the pursuit of developing tools to assist companies create workforces that matched with their culture. However, influenced by a shifting job economy, my brain stumbled upon the divergent path of market research and I immediately felt that the feeling of being exactly where the universe had destined me to be. I carried a strong sense of curiosity with me right from the entry-level. Looking back, I view my first few years as a researcher as the initial process of discovering not only how uniquely complex and powerful my brain is, but how perfectly this type of work connected with it--creating a chemical reaction in me that I've come to learn is capable of simultaneously taking me to the highest levels of my intelligence and lowest levels of my creative consciousness. Even during times where I felt like I was miserably failing at other aspects of life, I could turn to my work and make developmental leaps that were sometimes so huge and so real yet happened so quickly and so naturally that it felt like magic. That energy is what fuels Atomic Research today--what drives our curiosity and innovation, what engages us as workers, what keeps us solidly committed to our clients and our industry, and what consistency leads us down the path of best practice, even if we have to create it ourselves.

In 2011, a key moment occurred for me when I traveled to Green Bay to make an unannounced visit to an established, woman-owned market research firm whose website I stumbled upon. With a resume in hand, I exited an elevator to a third-floor office building where I made an awkward descent upon its staff and then delivered a tearful declaration of my love for market research. And again, I had a strong sense of being at the exactly right point in space and time. The idea of having to give up this career for another honestly feels no less unimaginable than trading my child for another. So, I offered to work without pay in exchange for the opportunity to not have to face that. I made that same elevator trip up to the third floor for the next six years of my life--as a project manager, an Analytics and Strategy Director, then a Vice President--for a company that never even had an open position. In a work environment without restrictions on how much I could learn or what tasks I could take on, I began a new and critical phase of my career and my life. I learned every core aspect of the field and followed every new concept to full understanding. I was recognized as the person who could solve the problems that were thought to be unsolvable. I wrote winning proposals for projects we thought to be unwinnable. I met the deadlines that were thought to be unmeetable. And I learned, and I grew, and I never stopped.

I'm eternally grateful for the women of research who served as mentors for me and didn't place limits on my learning. Despite my own talents and motivation, I truly believe that the level of achievement, wisdom, and satisfaction with life that I have today would not be possible had I come to work for a research company that did not provide me with this freedom. One of the most important things I did along the way was to pay that forward to women representing a new generation of curious, aspiring researchers--teaching them everything I could and giving them the same freedom to explore their own curiosities. Now when I exit onto the third floor, I'm not nervously seeking opportunities at someone else's' research company, I'm proudly walking into my own space--one that represents a remarkable journey, one that is staffed by some of the women who have been along on this journey with me for years, and one that again, feels like it’s exactly where I’m supposed to be.

When I started Atomic nearly three years ago, I did so without much notice, without any capital, a week before Christmas. I had to build this company with nothing more than my own knowledge and passion and the support of those I'd worked with along the way.

Going into our third year, we look toward what I consider to be our formal launch.
